There's a new way to adopt. And it starts with compatibility matchmaking.
There's a moment every impact-maker dreams about: the moment you make real impact, in real life, for a real person.
Less than two weeks after Burke County Animal Services opened its doors to The Human-Canine Alliance, that moment happened. Someone walked in, got matched, and walked out with their dog.
Not a demo. Not a projection on a slide. A real match, in real life, in under fourteen days.
That's the headline of this episode, but it's not the whole story. This month has been a stack of milestones, each one pushing The Human-Canine Alliance closer to the thing we set out to prove from day one: that compatibility, not chance, is what makes a rescue adoption stick.
Here's what's been building toward that first match:
- TH-CA accepted into SEA Change Accelerator — a nonprofit cohort built specifically for social enterprises that have to prove two things at once: real revenue and real, measurable impact. The program kicks off August 5th and ends with a pitch contest.
- Burke County Animal Services didn't get it right on the first try — and that's exactly the point. Staff tried introducing TH-CA after adopters had already fallen for a dog in the kennels, and it didn't land. So the shelter director flipped the process: now every walk-in starts at a repurposed kiosk out front — the "Matchmaking Station" — before they ever see a dog.
- Our advisory board is officially stood up — a cross-industry team in healthcare, pet care, and nonprofit operations, brought in because TH-CA isn't a pet adoption site. It's intended to be a digital public health solution, and it needs expertise Stacie doesn't have alone.
- We're closing in on 9,000 dogs across all 50 states — real dogs, waiting to be matched, not just browsed.

Stacie: Okay. First, we got in. The Human-Canine Alliance has been accepted into the Sea Change Accelerator.
Here's why that matters. Sea Change is a cohort, an accelerator for entrepreneurs, but it isn't your average startup incubator. It is an accelerator built specifically for social enterprises, which means that the product or service has to prove two things at once: that it can generate real revenue and that it can create a real [00:02:00] measurable impact.
Sea Change is a registered 501[c][3] nonprofit out of Columbus, Ohio, and for over 10 years, they have worked with founders across the country building ventures that are intended to make societal impact while also generating revenue. Sea Change exists to educate, connect, and support founders to structure that engine in the most effective way possible.
Getting accepted means that our model holds up to that scrutiny. The program kicks off August 5th with a pitch contest at the end.
More on what the program unlocks for us in a future episode, but for now, we're in.
/ The second thing I'd like to share is our first shelter pilot with Burke County Animal Services. And here's specifically what that means. Burke County isn't just offering The Human-Canine Alliance quietly on the side. Compatibility matching is now part of their walk-in adoption process.
But it didn't work right out of the gate.
Staff first tried introducing the Human-Canine Alliance after people were already inside, walking the kennels and people were already locked in and it fell flat.
So basically, when the staff member would introduce, "Hey, we have this new matchmaking program," they would kind of nod at them and say, "You know what? Can I look at this dog right here?" They just wanna see another dog.
But that friction actually led to the answer because the shelter director realized at our first week's check-in that we needed to make the questionnaire part of the process prior to seeing the dogs.
So staff took an old kiosk that wasn't being used and turned it into what they're now calling the "Matchmaking Station" right at the front of the shelter, loaded with Burke County's Human-Canine Alliance unique page.
[00:04:00] And the director's instructions to her team are simple: "You start here. Unless someone walks in with a specific dog in mind that they found online, you start here."
And from there, staff use the results to help the person narrow down the best dogs to pull out and interact with.
And as you heard in the open, we just had our first adopted match. Less than two weeks of integrating this at Burke County, less than one week of integrating it using the kiosk method.

Stacie: Third, our advisory board is officially stood up. This was intentional from the start because the Human-Canine Alliance is intended to be a digital public health solution. We are sitting at the intersection of healthcare and wellness, animal welfare and societal value, and social prescriptions.
So instead of building a board of people who would just nod along or have similar expertise to what I have, I built a team of people across every industry we're actually walking into: healthcare strategy, pet care availability, nonprofit and advisory operations
This is a group of people with expertise I do not have. They offer tremendous knowledge and will help me navigate the complexities of translating compatibility science into a measurable, prescribable, and reimbursable option in our society.
One advisor has already pointed us towards a go-to-market pathway I had not yet considered, and that's exactly what this kind of cross-industry expertise is supposed to do.

Stacie: My fourth update. We are closing in on 9,000 dogs in our directory from all 50 states. Profiles are updated on a weekly [00:06:00] basis, some of them more often than that, meaning every one of those dogs is a real dog waiting to be matched, not just browsed, matched.
You can take the compatibility quiz yourself and add your location so your matches are the ones near you.
And if you find a match you're interested in, simply fill out the meet and greet form. It goes straight to the rescue. You could seriously be matched with a dog near you today!
Just go to app.humancaninealliance.com and click Get Matched. It'll take you right into the questionnaire. It'll take you about five minutes to fill it out, and you will see matches on the other side that you can browse through, that you can see why you match. And it will give you an actual report of compatibility factors and training potential for that dog.
And you can do that all right from wherever you're sitting or standing right now. Unless you're driving. Don't do it if you're driving. Wait till you're done driving.

Stacie: Okay, like I said at the beginning, the big news is we have a real-life match that's been adopted. However, there's been some amazing things happening in the last month or two, and I'm so excited to be sharing all of this with you.
